A third of firms do not use antivirus software for data protection

Over one third of small to medium sized enterprises do not use antivirus software as part of their data protection plans, according to an industry expert.
Donall Burns, technical director of ICONI Software, told the Belfast Telegraph that even those who choose to have facilities like this installed are not keeping them up-to-date, therefore rendering the software ineffective.
"All computers must be regularly updated to ensure that, where security vulnerabilities have been identified, they are not left exposed. For the forgetful (or lazy), you can even tell the computer to do it itself," Mr Donall explained.
He went on to say that it is also important to think about portable hardware, such as laptops, iPads, smartphones and USB devices.
"The cost to your business of replacing such items can be much less significant than the cost of loss of data," he added.
Recently, those concerned with data security were warned about a new form of internet cookie which could be exploited if precautions are not taken.
