Microsoft has stopped the Windows Phone 7 update for Samsung Windows phones. There was a technical issue with the Windows Phone update process that impacted a small number of Samsung phones, including the Samsung Focus and Samsung Omnia 7.
Microsoft is working to correct the problem as quickly as possible. As a precaution, updates to Samsung phones were suspended. Microsoft continues to update other Windows Phone models as scheduled.
Microsoft has gotten a lot of flack for the problem. Updates for smartphones are proving to be difficult for the manufacturers and software companies. It has taken over six months for Samsung Galaxy owners in the U.S. to get updated to Android 2.2 Froyo, causing many owners to protest and even threaten to file lawsuits.
- 90 percent of people who've received an update notification have installed the new software patch successfully. (So when your turn to download arrives, chances are good that it will be a non-event.)
- Of the 10 percent who did experience a problem, nearly half failed for two basic reasons - a bad Internet connection or insufficient computer storage space.
