That is according to Vertical Slice, which has claimed the device could encourage casual mobile gamers to take up console gaming.
The comments come shortly after Sony Ericsson launched the new device at the Barcelona Mobile World Congress, confirming that users will be able to access the PlayStation Suite on the phone and play a wide range of the console's game titles.
Graham McAllister, director of Vertical Slice, said: 'This device is unlikely to be a game changer in the same sense that the iPhone or the App Store was.'
However, the expert added that 'due to the range of controls, the Xperia PLAY could potentially offer games with more depth of game play than what has come before.
'Therefore, it could act as a bridge for a player who is currently a casual mobile gamer to move towards console gaming.'
