STOCKHOLM—Telecommunications-gear maker Nokia Siemens Networks said its planned acquisition of most of Motorola Solutions Inc.'s network-equipment assets won't be completed in the first quarter as it is still waiting for Chinese antitrust authorities to review the deal.
Nokia Siemens said it remains committed to the acquisition but didn't estimate its completion date.
Motorola said Wednesday that China's antitrust regulator extended its review of the deal for up to 60 days, without disclosing a reason.
Nokia Siemens Networks, a joint venture of Finland's Nokia Corp. and Germany's Siemens AG agreed to buy the bulk of Motorola's network equipment business for $1.2 billion last July.
But Chinese telecom-equipment maker Huawei Technologies Co. in January asked a U.S. federal court to block the deal, arguing that Motorola had sold Huawei-branded gear and that the Chinese company's intellectual property might be transferred to rival Nokia Siemens through the planned acquisition.
A federal judge in Chicago last month issued a preliminary injunction which prevents the transfer of any Huawei secrets through the Motorola acquisition.
The delay disclosed Wednesday wasn't surprising, according to Pohjola Bank analyst Hannu Rauhala. "This is a complicated task. Lots of questions remain and it might take a very long time," he said. He said the delay isn't significant and is unlikely to affect the companies' shares.
Nokia Siemens has said that it has "absolutely no interest" in Huawei's trade secrets, adding that the company wants to buy the Motorola assets to gain access to new customers and make inroads in markets such as the U.S. and Japan.
