The take-up of Android smartphones by Australian telcos has today increased by two, with the Motorola Defy heading to Optus and the HTC Desire Z to be ranged by Vodafone.(Credit: CBSi)
Optus will be the second carrier to range the Defy after Telstra launched the handset on the Next G network at the end of 2010. The Optus version of the Defy will differ slightly, with a new black-and-white chassis. The Desire Z, however, is new to our shores, and becomes the 10th Android handset in Vodafone's range at this time, and its second Android exclusive following the launch of the HTC Desire HD last November.
Both phones offer a different take on the Android platform, with the Defy being the only ruggedised smartphone available at this time, and the Desire Z offering a full QWERTY keyboard under its 3.7-inch display. They also differ on the version of Android they run, with HTC's phone on the 2.2 platform while the Defy lags behind on 2.1.
Optus will range the Defy from today starting at $0 upfront on a AU$49 per month plan. The Desire Z will be priced closer to its launch in mid-March.
