But like all-electric cars, including the Nissan Leaf now on sale, many will cost over the £20,000 mark - and that includes the £5,000 Government grant. The good news is electric and hybrid models will become increasingly affordable as firms invest heavily in reducing the cost of battery technology and increasing the range capability.
New models at Geneva ranged from the tiny all-electric Renault Twizy to an 85mpg Range Rover, the striking Nissan Esflow coupé and Rolls-Royce's first electric model.
