KOREAN ELECTRONICS MAKER Samsung has announced mass production of a 22-inch transparent LCD panel that it claims is a world first.
The panel comes in both black-and-white and colour, with a contrast ratio of 500:1 and WSXGA+ resolution of 1680x1050 pixels.
Standard LCD panels, which use a backlight, have only 5 per cent transparency, but Samsung's panels boast transparency of 20 per cent for the black-and-white models and 15 per cent for the colour versions.
The panels are also much more power efficient than standard backlit LCDs, using 90 per cent less energy. This saving is achieved by not relying on artificial lighting, since a transparent panel can use environmental ambient lighting, such as the sun.
HDMI and USB support will also be built into the panels, which Samsung believes have potential in both the consumer and business markets, with advertising a particular focus. µ
