Nokia Could Cut Up To 6,000 R&D Jobs, Union Warns

Nokia (NOK) could cut as many as 6,000 jobs in research and development in a restructuring expected to be unveiled by the end of next month, according Antti Rinne, an official with Pro, Finland’s largest private-sector office-worker union, as reported by Bloomberg. That would be about 38% of the company’s global R&D staff. Nokia is not commenting.
Nokia is phasing out development of its proprietary Symbian and MeeGo operating systems for smart phones, opting instead to use Microsoft (MSFT) Windows Phone 7.
The story notes that Nokia spent $4.3 billion on research in 2010, more than twice the $1.78 billion Apple (AAPL) spent on R&D. Nokia had 16,134 R&D employees at the end of last year.
Meanwhile, the Financial Times reports that Nokia expects to suffer market share losses as it makes the transition to Phone 7 from Symbian.
