Still Priced at $349
Samsung Galaxy Tab WiFi news: A lot has been made of Samsung “dummying down” the popular Galaxy Tab 3G tablet that was so popular to make the Wifi version that retails for $349. Sales went through the roof as soon as the Wifi version was released, and it wasn’t until users got the tablet in their hands that they noticed their were some hardware and software changes made from the original model. There were some blog writers whining and complaining, and I can totally understand their gripe. If Samsung had intentionally lied about the specs on the Wifi-only model, I would be hot too!
But they didn’t! On every sales page and spec sheet I saw, the new specs were right there in black and white (and blue, or gray, or even green on some websites) for anyone to see. And besides, the Samsung Galaxy Tab Wi-fi runs $200 to $300 less than other Android tablets and the iPad 2. How did customers think that could be done with the same components from the pricier 3G model? But the bottom line is performance. If the Galaxy Tab 7 inch Wifi version didn’t perform, then I could see getting upset about it.
But I have used the Wifi-only Tab, for web browsing, video recording, video games and emailing and I found the experience enjoyable, and quite frankly don’t understand what the stink is all about. I think that is why the Galaxy Tab Wifi has continued to sell so well. People are getting them home, their friends are checking them out, and these tablets are performing, so word of mouth is driving sales.
After the iPad came out, everyone loved it. But then the Galaxy Tab 3G came out in late 2010, and everyone said, “I wish the iPad had dual cameras!” So Apple added a second camera, and a segment of the fans still weren’t happy. Then the never-happies said, “I wish the iPad 2 had an expansion slot SD feature” because they didn’t have anything else to gripe about. When Apple changes that on the iPad 3, they will just find something else to cry about.
Look, if you like the 7 inch tablet size for its better portability, ability to pop into a large pocket, hold in one hand, and are looking for an Android OS and Flash support, the Samsung Galaxy Tab Wifi is the perfect tablet for you. I have used it, and I have used the iPad 2, and for the couple of hundred dollars difference, I will take the good-looking, high-performing Galaxy Tab Wifi any day of the week.
